Just went through this on a friends Volvo. I am not a big fan of bumping the starter or doing anything that may cause something to fly anywhere. This is what I picked up from the Brickboard. Take out #1 spark plug and turn the engine by hand until the cylendar is down. Now take about 4 feet of closeline and thread it down into the spark plug hole. I got about 2 feet or so into there. Use a screwdriver to help push it in. Be sure you leave some hanging out so that you can get it back out. Then turn the engine with a socket until the piston starts up. It will not make top dead center and you now have all the rope spread out across the piston so there will be no damage to the piston. Put a nice big breaker bar on the bolt and there you go. Do not pull the rope out yet because it will also stop the piston to retourqe the bolt. You may have to rotate the engine backwards just a bit to get the rope out but man oh man did this work like a charm. I never would have believed it.
