Gentlemen,
Thanks for the sage advice. Despite the very creative suggestions as to how to stop the engine from turning, I opted for the impact wrench. I was able to pickup a 240 lb. ft. electric impact gun at 50% off.
Removing the main pulley bolt with the the impact was a cinch - it took about 10 seconds, the pulley itself didn't turn a bit. Also, I was pleasantly surprised as the pulley slid easily off the shaft.
In all, I replace the main pulley, idler pully, tensioner pulley, tensioner shock and belt. Compressing the shock was the hardest part.
My method- a variation on the home-made tool (a la Haynes and Quasi): I used a long peice of metal bar with only one bolt in, and wedged this btwn. the garage floor and the lower tensioner shock bracket. As an assistant (my g/f who has never worked on a car before in her life) slowly compressed the tensioner by tightening the pulley bolt (to the left), I reset the metal bar on less an angle, thus keeping the shock more and more compressed. I had to reset the breaker bar on the bolt and reset the metal bar two or three times until the tensioner was compressed enough to allow me to slip the belt over the alternator bracket.
Regards,
Gabe
