It sounds like and if you are in luck that it might be enough with just a voltage regulator.
Depending on if it is a turbo or not, it might be possible to reach it from the top.
Saab part number is 8590549 and has been used in many 900 and 9000 alternators.
The Bosch number is 1197311028
The same voltage regulator is used in a multitude of older Volvos and other brand cars using Bosch alternators so it should be fairly easy to find locally.
It is very often enough with just a new voltage regulator but many shops are not willing to try that of different reasons.
