voltage reg Posted by KenManiac [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: note on aftermarket alternatives, turbosaab ![]() ![]() |
i just changed my voltage regulator last week
it took a little while to get the screws loose, but i was leaning over the fender working mostly blind. it's a tight spot, but from what i've read here it's easier than taking the alternator out.
my light came on the day before i had to visit a client an hour away, i found a decent used one in my pile of parts. it is a standard Bosch reg, used on volvo, vw, saab, bmw, and prolly others too.
i picked up a new reg from a good local imported parts place for $30 but haven't out it in yet
one smart thing i did was to find small bolts, with a 7mm hex head, instead of those stripper screws. i think they were originally from a toyota distributor cap, iirc.
mine is a turbo, your mileage may vary. non turbos have a bigger intake manifold and are more difficult to get at.
if you can't get a part, try to find someone who'll hook jumper cables up for a while (half an hour or so) (their car running, yours not) after a while, start yours then unhook the cables and make a run ffor home. turn everything electrical off that you can. (pull DRL fuse, HVAC fuse, keep stereo off, if it gets dark unplug one headlight, etc) i made it to within 100 feet of home during a bad snowstorm doing this years ago.
700 miles might take a few charges from kind strangers, but it's doable. feeling adventurous?
