Removing Valves from cylinder head..

I am in the process of removing the valves from my cylinder head on my 1993 9000 CS n/t so I can get the head pressure tested and cleaned. The reason the head is off is because I had a head gasket leak and a broken exhaust valve on cylinder # 3. I bought the specical valve spring compressor tool and am going to try to remove the valves today.
General question about removing the valves, when I compress the valve spring using the tool, do I need to push up on the valve from under the head to allow the valve spring retainers to release? I've never remove the valves from a saab head, so I was just looking for some direction before I started. Thanks for the help!
