Thanks - that was a very enjoyable read !
I too do the crimp/solder/HS thing, and agree with your conclusions
(though I have skipped the bodily injury parts !).
Fortunately I have a better/newer fan motor and resistor on hand,
and the wiring diagram - so I need to chase that whole circuit from
end to end, very soon...but I think the guy I bought it from did
the melting with his krappy jumper job - he just wasn't into repair.
I would still love to hear if there is a good, easy source for exact
replacement relay sockets - wiring one in, but free in the box seems
like it would be an elegant and solid repair to me.
