I think you're referring to an automatic, right? At least judging from the description you'e given.
Here's what the Haynes manual says:
1. Take car on short trip to get it up to normal operating temp.
2. It says to jack up the rear and front & place on jack stands. BE CAREFUL; fluid will be hot.
3. Put container under the drain plug, which is I think a torx style bolt few inches toward the front of the car, I think. Loosen & drain. Tighten plug.
4. Unscrew those 3 bolts you were talking about. That's where the trans filter is; fluid will come out. I'd suggest installing a new filter, too. Be careful not to lose the magnet that's on the inside of the cover of the filter. reinstall filter, and cover & tighten bolts. Fill trans w/ enough fluid to come between the marks. Test drive & check level.
