The metal chunks sound a little larger than normal. I would drive it for a thousand miles and check the filter again. If there are fewer or no more chunks, there maybe light at the end of the tunnel. If the filter has not been changed since new, some debri would be expected. A healthy tranny will have very little debri in the filter if the oil is changed regularly. When changing the oil, there is less chance of a mess if the rear plug is removed first, you get most of the oil out through the plug and only a cup or so from the filter cover. Also a fair amount of oil is not drained if the rear plug is not removed.
On a level surface, fill the trany until the oil level is just touching the metal spring portion of the dipstick, should be about right after it has been run and shifted a bit.
