Sure sounds like the engine mount. That's the location of the lower motor mounts.

Since you have an automatic, try this - open the hood, and then get back in and start the engine. From the driver's seat, you can see the top of the engine. Foot firmly on the brake (my lawyer told me to say that), put the car into reverse, then shift to neutral, then to drive, and so on. Watch the top of the engine move.

With good motor mounts, the top of the engine should move forward and back about 1/2 inch or so. If the engine moves forward and back a lot more than that (>1 inch), seems to really lurch, and you hear clunks, then I'd suspect the lower mounts.

You can see the front lower mount - peer down between the engine face (belt side) and coolant reservoir, at the front right corner of the engine block. You'll see the top of the mount - it's a rubber circle with a bolt coming through. If you see any cracks in the rubber, the mount is shot.

The best inspection involves removing the wheel well inner liner - about 15-20 minutes of work - and inspecting the mounts. Worth the effort if you're trying to dodge a big dealer bill.

I wouldn't rule out suspension issues, like ball joints or bushings - a good wheel-off inspection of the area may turn up something.

Lower mounts aren't cheap at the dealer - I've been quoted $500 for the pair, parts and labor. An independent shop that does Saabs should be cheapter - I've seen a little over $300 in my area. It is a DIY job - I've done it a few times, and mail order the parts are reasonable.

The only issue of doing mounts is what all else you get into. With the wheel well inner liner off, ask yourself - when was the last time you did the serpentine belt? How about the tensioner and idler pulleys - they're usually good for only about 75K max. How does the harmonic balancer look? Any leaking from the front main seal or around the oil pump? I usually take the opportunity to do a bunch of things all at once. Don't ask how much all of that would cost at the dealer.
