Removing carbon buildup from valves and pistons..

On my 93 9000 CS n/t, it had a broken exhaust valve and bad headgasket. I just got my cylinder head back from the machine shop, they pressure tested it, cleaned it, and checked for any warpage, and the cylinder head is completely fine. Now I want to clean my valves and the top of the pistons to remove the carbon build up since everything is exposed.
How can I clean the carbon build up off of the valves and top of the pistons? I bought some brake cleaner, but that doesn't seem to do anything except make me light-headed. . Can I try actual brake fluid? I heard that stuff eats through anything. Can any one recommend anything to use? Someone has actually recommended using a wire brush or wire wheel on a benchtop grinder. But I would assume that would wear down the metal a bit, which I dont think I want to do.
Thanks a lot for your help.
