I've got a problem, and so far, haven't found a solution. Any help will be appreciated.
'97 CSE, turbo, automatic, 80,000 miles. Car ran great, but a couple of times recently smelled a little coolant in the cabin. Figured heater core. Remembered suggestions for Barr's Leak, gave it 1/2 container per instructions. Also topped off coolant in reservoir, maybe a little less than a quart. Coolant (before adding Barr's)appeared relatively clean. Initially, no more coolant smell in cabin.
Fast forward a week or so and maybe a couple of 20 mile trips....
Thought I smelled coolant again in cabin. Switched from auto to economy a couple of times, and noted, all of a sudden, engine temp gauge almost pegged in the red zone. Pulled over to side, shut down, waited a half hour or so, to cool down. Noted hose from top of radiator to engine hard (full of liquid) and hot. Also, a little coolant coming out of top of reservoir.
Cooling fan running on high, not on low speed. Tapped housing where thermostat located firmly with lug wrench, thinking/hoping it was stuck closed. Half hour later, temp back down, drove .8 mile to house at 25, temp seemed OK.
Next day, tried to get car to mechanic, it overheated again, turned around
came home. Following day had car towed/carried to Saab mechanic.
He drives car. It overheats, boils quite a bit of coolant out. He finds fan behind radiator operating on high speed, not low. Replaces fan.
He drives car. Fan works on both low and high speeds. Stil overheats. We note coolant looks like mud (any chance Barr's does that?). The hose from top of radiator to engine is cool, and feels empty (with engine running). Reservoir full, even though we've lost probably 2 quarts of coolant. He attaches Trac II(?)Saab diagnostic meter on, and temperature is reading about 265F. When upper hose is "squeezed" you can see air bubbles coming out in reservoir. Heat over engine itself does'nt seem especially hot.
Anyone got any ideas? Bad thermostat? Head gasket? Bad temp sensor? Clogged radiator? Bad water pump (doesn't seem water is getting out of radiator))? All of the above?
Thanks to anyone who responds.
