A doubt about re-torquing head bolts?

I am planning on retorquing the head bolts on my 1995 CS with 130k miles -- the indy said there's a slight leak and the coolant smelled like exhaust. He quoted $900 for the head gasket job, but then said I can try retorque head bolts. If it worked, then great. If it doesn't, I have nothing to lose. While this sounds like something to justify retorquing the head bolts.
I am OK with car repairs and do most of the routine stuffs myself, so I did not have problem to follow the procedure of re-torquing except for one place. The original head bolts were tightened in three stages, and a final 90 degree turn. Then should I do the same 90 degree turn when retorquing? My understanding is that the first time the bolts were turned an additional 90 degree, they were stretched to a certain point and provide proper torque. If I do a second 90 degree turn when retorquing, would it break the bolts? I searched saabnet for the whole night and did not find any information on this. However, it does seem many members retorqued and had good results. Can someone shared their experience with me? thanks
