I've been doing some research on this myself and this is what I have found out. The later 9000s came equipped from the factory with synthetic oil - I believe that 1997 was late enough to have the syn oil but you should check in your owner's manual. you should replace this with Saab synthetic oil, or possibly Amsoil, depending on whom you believe. There are two types of Saab synthetic oil - and they are apparently not compatible. Assuming yours has synthetic oil from the factory then you should replace it with the original Saab syn oil, or if you want to use the new and improved oil (MTL063 I think it's called) you have to make sure you flush all the old stuff out (see quasimotors.com for that procedure). Of course, if you don't know wheter the tranny oil has ever been replaced, you don't know for sure what's in there and it's probably a good idea to flush it anyway.
