i have heard nothing but good stuff about tdi
especially with a white house full of oil men
in america, diesel is sulfur-laden crap. europe and other civilized areas have plenty of diesel cars. maybe in 2007 when we get decent fuel it will change. i know in my area (tri-state NY region) i cannot even buy a new one, due to emissions (and the sulfur laden crap that passes for fuel here)
you can get 60 mpg, or 900 miles per tank if you have a light foot. i had a real crappy diesel vw (pre-tdi) and i loved the engine and the mileage. (the crappiness was not vws fault, btw) i could not get it under 40mpg, even cruising at speeds i don't tell my mother about.
instant throttle response (i know, there's no throttle in there, but...) amazing torque at all speeds, major grunt at low rpm, leave it in 3rd until you get to the highway, and fill the tank infrequently at worst.
if i had my wish i'd have a 9000 aero for fun (maybe a 900 for winter when diesel prices go up) and a tdi jetta wagon for getting myself and stuff to where we had to get.
