I did a shifter rod for a 94- FM57101, and essentially you end up taking the transmission apart to replace the shifter rod. It was still available from the dealer for the 94- model. The manual for the later model is also still available from the dealer or obtainable on the great auction site. I saw some of the older manuals in my searches for the newer manual.
Look at quasimotors.com for an overview on how to take it apart. The shifter rod is early in the steps, you don't have to pull any internal shafts, just have to do 5th gear.
Be careful of the shifter forks and the little ball bearings in the internal shifter. Its like doing a 3-D puzzle putting them back together.
The other alternative is to find a used one in good condition. The '86 might have more in common with the C900, check the cross-references. C900s aren't any easier to find, but you never know.
