You can generally rebuild a turbo if its damage is limited to wear on the thrust surfaces, meaning that the only detectable "slop" you can feel by hand is fore-and-aft along the axis of the turbo shaft.
On the other hand, if you have virtually any degree of side-to-side play, there's a good chance that the turbo housing itself is worn. If so, then to properly rebuild requires a reboring of the housing surfaces and use of oversized bearings. Not a job for the do-it-yourselfer unfortunately. Add to that the possibility that the turbine and/or compressor vanes may have been damaged by coming into contact with the housing (necessitating the vanes' replacement), and that the housing itself may have cracks, and there are very often too many issues to effectively rebuild these things. From my research I concluded that this is true more often than not.
That's why rebuilt units are often almost as expensive as a new unit, due to the man-hours required to rebuild properly.
Not saying don't do it; just take a good hard look at what you've got there, and if you think there's damage to the housing and/or vanes, you're probably out of luck. You could always still give it a try, but you may not get much life out of the rebuild.
If you find yourself in that position, you might do well trolling Ebay or site sponsors for a good used unit. I don't think they cost much for that particular unit these days.
