you might have some siezed calipers, a bad master cylinder or a failed vacuum booster.
does the pedal sink to the floor if you apply gentle pressure? if so, the master cylinder is prolly bad.
is the brake fluid low? if one part of the reservior is low you may have a broken (rusted) brake line.
the pulling before the pedal got real hard is a tad troubling. a failed vacuum booster prolly wouldn't do that.
the good news is that the clicking from the shifter is the interlock put in to avoid the sudden accelleration/wrong pedal syndrome.
how old is the brake fluid? was brake work done recently?
