For me, the clunking was actually the rear engine mount. Everything looked great from above but that mount doesn't get "pulled" like the front one does. Instead, it tends to get squished. The one I removed from my car got thrown away today...it still looked good, but I could compress it almost a half inch with just my hand. When the engine was under load, the thing would apparently squish enough to have the safetly piece incorporated into the mount set-up hit the other metal portions of the mount. I spend a year and a half trying to hunt that thing down. Changing the obviously bad front mount, installing poly on the top, etc. seemed to remedy the problem, sorta...but it always remained and just got worse. I was told the mounts were 2 years old when I bought the car. Previous owner liked to drive hard from time to time which may have explained the worn top mount...which leads to bad bottom mounts which leads to me missing the problem for the next few years and hating having purchased the car. When I found the problem, I was a happy man to say the least.
just a thought.
