That sounds like a bad starter or bad starter solenoid. Since the solenoid is mounted on the starter, not a big difference in terms of access. And unless money is really tight, if it were the solenoid, I'd take the opportunity to replace the starter while I was at it, as it's no spring chicken.
To be sure, I'd have an assistant try and start the car while you listen with the hood open. The starter is under the intake plenum, between the engine and the firewall. If that is where you hear the click from, then I'd say it's the starter/solenoid. The reason to listen there is that there is a relay that clicks also, and it's easy to confuse the two from the driver's seat.
I'd do a visual inspection to make sure the cables look intact, but just about anything else involves removing the starter. A rebuilt unit shouldn't be that expensive, and access really isn't that bad - it really helps to have the car up on ramps or a lift to get access from below.
