I'll be in (very hot/humid) Corpus Christi for the next 3 months, and my AC has died. Futhermore, there are no Saab dealers here (which, in turn means no Saabs) and no one knows how to work on these things or diagnose them here. If I can find a reasonable diagnosis, I'd say I stand a much better chance of getting it fixed without unnecessary repairs. I'll tell you all I know.

I haven't used the AC since about September. It worked then, but it would go on and off (especially in humid weather) meaning it didn't keep the cabin all that cool. My car just has dials, not the climate control system, so it should have just stayed on.

During the time in between, the following things have happened, which might affect it.

1) I ran the car for about a week with the whole ventilation electronics system disconnected when the dash was off (including the AC switch.) Maybe this caused a relay to blow or something? I've checked all the AC fuses and they are fine.

2) The AC compressor broke off the engine block (long story... basically, the power steering fluid got too low, and a hard turn overstressed the belt, and the compressor mounting bracket cracked clear off the block.) Though this seems like an obvious culprit, it showed no signs of leaks then, and I think the AC may have been dead before that (not sure, though.)

Of course, it may just need a charge, but seeing has how it used to shut itself off intermittantly before (and cooled fine when it was on) I suspect something else is wrong. Maybe the clutch that activates the compressor?

Also, pressing the AC button makes it light up, but there is no change in performance/fuel economy, which makes me think it isn't engaging at all.

The AC was last serviced under warranty at about 50k miles. (Or so I was told... I got the car with 127k miles, so I can't verify.) It has 136k now.
