No need to panick.
The upper hose takes hot water from the engine via the thermostat, in your case, the hot water got dumped (perhaps partially). At the same time the cold water (relatively speaking) from the radiator replaced whatever amount that went through the thermostat. Unless your radiator became completely empty, this replenishment continues and there would be no water shortage in the block. So, no overheating in the block. Which, by the way, explains why your temperature gauge read normal.
Naturally, lose of coolant is always cause for concern, if you have a head gasket issue, there will be oil in the coolant expansion tank and a sweat smell (of burnt coolant) from the exhaust. Keep an eye on them.
