I had what sounds like the same thing happening to my driver's side window.
I took the interior door panel off (check the archives for a procedure) ans found that the window guide/track had become loose. Once it went all the way down, it got just enough off so that on its return trip up, it came out, with a sudden lurch, about 3/4 of the way up.
I loosened the bolts which hold the guide in place, and after moving it to its appropriate place, the window worked. It was the guide in the front of the door, below the mirror what had shifted.
