Tranny Shot?

My mom has a '94 Aero automatic with 165,000 that reverse stopped working in four days ago. She's since bought a new car, and was told by the dealership (not Saab) that they'd give her $100 for her Aero. Aside from the tranny issue, the thing's in pretty great shape. My questions are these: are trannies always shot in these cars when reverse stops working? The forward gears work, albeit kinda logy (if that's a word). The "tranny's shot" diagnosis was made by a local tow-truck driver, and the guys at our local garage, who rarely ever see a Saab. And if the tranny is shot, can you get good rebuilt or used ones in CT, and are they a total nightmare to replace? (my brother-in-law is a mechanic who sometimes works on Saabs, but I'm interested in the board's opinion first) Or would I just be better off parting the thing out? It's got a good-running engine, great rims and tires, a brandy new exhaust, the leather's mint, etc., etc. The car's got to be worth more than $100. But in what form? Many thanks in advance . . .
