I was fixing my hood latches and noted that 3 of the AC fan blades were missing. Also it wouldnt turn on. I bought one at 4PM troday at a U PULL IT for $2.00 and it works fine. I went to install it at 6 PM...what a mess...Finally I checked Quasimotor'sw site and found this, all of which I agree with. But I dont want to drain my AC or ruin my cross member. There must be an Easier way!!! PLEASE HELP
"The fan lives on the front of the AC condenser. To remove it in the conventional way, you need to drain and remove the radiator, remove the oil cooler, remove the intercooler and, finally, remove the condenser - and here's where it gets sticky! You have to disconnect the AC hoses to the condenser, which means discharging the system; to do that legally, you have to have a shop do it so the freon can be captured. But the worst part is that when I removed the hoses (my system was void of freon), the anti-sieze compound did not do its job and I ruined the threads on both the condenser connections AND the hoses! Cost a few hundred dollars and a hell of a lot of work to fix it, plus I ended up with an inferior condenser. Can you say, "Nightmare"?
About the only other way to do it is to remove the sheet metal cross member that runs across the front of the car, which is what I recommend. The only real problem with that is that they spot welded the cross member to two vertical members that do something innocuous. Were it not for that, the cross member would lift right out after removing the four bolts at the two ends . I consider it worthwhile to drill through the spot welds so the cross member can be removed. I used a 5/16" drill and drilled four or five holes, but still had to work pretty hard with a hammer and chisel to get all the remnants of the welds (I used a 12" chisel and found the length useful). On the driver's side I never did get all the welds broken loose, but found that I could pull the cross member up far enough to get the fan out. The grille has to be removed, of course, as well as the headlights and marker lights (they're easy). I re-assembled it with nuts, bolts and washers. It sounds a bit crude, but I would go a long, long way to avoid ever having to remove a condenser again, unless I knew it was bad to begin with; even then, there's the threads on the hoses to consider."
