gavin,

unfortunately i can't help, but i can relate my story...

i left my 90 9000 a beloved car in massachusetts when i moved to florida. i would drive it rarely when i went back to visit. the coolant was fine. it always started after battery was jumped. that never changed.

at some point while sitting, the slave cylinder seal must have shrunk, because it started acting up one december. then fixed itself, and worked in the following april for a 300 mile trip, then failed a block from home.

i let it sit until february when i had it towed to a local saab mech to replace the slave, at that point the engine was running fine, however the mech noticed that my coolant resevoir was frozen, and wondered if any damage was done to the headgasket. also noticed my brake lines were severely rusted and weren't safe in his opinion and at that point recommended i not pay him to fix my car (210K miles)...

apparently my coolant broke down while the car had been sitting for a couple years and was no longer as effective. the brake lines, i'm not sure what i could have done to protect.

anyway, i decided not to put the $ into the car so i could save it for future, and save on insurance (i had kept comp on it, which worked out because the heavy northeast rains last fall creeped in my sunroof and flooded the car, not bad, but some mold, and my car got totaled by ins company i got $650 out of it.

i'll never know if the engine was compromised, it ran, but my saab mech was really worried about it having a problem down the road and didn't want to fix the slave or the brake lines which would have to be custom made, as he couldn't get new parts.

so, just i'd replace coolant and do what you can to make sure car is protected, that was my favorite 9000

good luck,
aaron
