The fact that you have to jiggle the battery cables around leads me to believe that you have a problem with one of the cables or the ground point. Without a proper circuit, the charging system may be working way too hard to recharge the battery (the VR is "seeing" a lower voltage than what's actually at the battery), leading to overcharging, which causes the water/acid to boil over, etc. Contrary to what Wingerr says, I would not waste any effort or money on a new battery until you find out what the real problem is - the battery from your running C900 should have been fine (unless you really did just add water to it).
First, clean off the cable ends, reinstall and do some voltage measurements compared to ground - Ari has written up this procedure a few times. If I recall correctly, anything more than a tenth of a volt difference over the length cable is a problem. After you sort this out, I would suspect the Voltage Regulator, which is designed to control overcharging.
