A fine explanation indeed. It all makes sense and I think that if an Aero is driven moderately it will run fine on 87 octane, just not at full performance. But then you aren't going for full performance driving moderately. But if one starts to push it, especially in hot weather, there is the potential for damage to the engine, so 91 or 93 makes sense. I think 89 is still reasonable for day to day use even in a stock Aero.
I have run 87, 89, 91, and 93 in my CSE. There is a noticeable drop in performance with 87: it simply won't go to full boost. 89, which I run most of the time, gets full boost and then some (under the right conditons). I do notice a step up when I put in 91 or 93, but unless I'm deliberately driving hard there isn't a lot of practical benefit. Gas mileage for most driving seems pretty much the same between 89, 91 and 93, including on trips.
