It works basically the same as the instantaneous one, except it's an average since the last time the EDU was reset (pressing and holding the R button for a few seconds). The MTE or DTE reading is based on remaining fuel and the average fuel consumption over the previous 20 minutes or so.
The accuracy of both of these readings is variable between different cars. I've had ones that were within 1%, but my current car reads 8% better than reality. Note also that the MTE or DTE do not necessarily reach zero when the tank is empty, but a predetermined amount of reserve fuel. This amount is actually programmable, though finding someone who actually knows how to change it is a challenge (my local dealer has no idea).
