How to determine a later gearbox car

I'm currently bidding on a 1994 9000 as a parts car. The owner hasn't a clue about engine and gearbox numbers and hasn't got a camera. Therefore, without viewing the car, how can I determine whether it has the later GM gearbox? He says it's a 1994 car. He bought it in 1994. However, it could still be a MY93, couldn't it?
I'm a bit suspicious that it might have the old style gearbox because he told me that it has no passenger airbag and I thought that this was introduced at the same date as the gearbox change.
Thanks
Tomee
