not sure what you mean by 'out of whack', but you probably have the speakers out of phase.
ideally, all the cones should move in in the same direction. if one of the rears is out, bass will be lacking. if the rears are out of phase from the fronts it will sound like the sound is coming from around you rather than being centered in your head. hard to describe, but i'm trying.
an easy way to check polarity on the speakers is to touch (briefly!) the terminals with a weak 9v battery. watch the cone, it will jump in or out. (don't leave it hooked up for more than a little bit)
make sure you have the battery oriented the same way for each speaker, and hook them up so they all jump the same way.
