Saab beleived that the exhaust manifold needed to flex from all the heat generated so with the longer studs, they expand more and allow the manifold to move.
It might have looked good on paper but in reality, the expanding/contraction of those long studs also weakens them and they will break over time.
I have installed the short studs now for years without any noticeable difference and with no one breaking yet or a cracked manifold, so that seems to work.
On some newer Saabs (900/9-3/9-5) you cannot use the short studs due to that the shank of the long ones are also used to hold air injection tubing or heat shields.
