Perhaps you have a bearing in something driven by the belt that is going out? If you are adept at removing and installing the big rubber band consider removing it and starting the car and letting it idle for a few minutes. This will isolate the alternator, AC pump, PS pump, various pulleys too. If the noise goes away, reinstall the belt, test again. if the noise comes right back you know where to start. A long screwdriver placed against the item to test (place the blade on the alternator to test alternator) hold handle leaving a space to put your ear to near the handle, that will approximate using a stethescope (sp?). If it's not the easy stuff, Alternator, AC pump or PS pump, it's most likely a pulley. The good, or bad, news is that they only get worse and you will be able to tell where it's coming from.
