rear shock rust- gonna do the repair. Advice? (long) Posted by Henry Helfman [Email] (#787) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Henry Helfman) on Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:30:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1995 aero, 173k. Body in good shape. Top inner rear wheel well appears to be cracking and rusting beneath undercoating. I haven't pulled anything apart yet so I dont know how bad it really is but I've been watching it since winter time (power washed underbody religously for salt) and it may have gotten worse. Rest of undercarriage is very clean. Suspension still feels fine.
For those of you who have tackled this before or are planning, whats the best way to get at this? from underneath? from the interior? How much time should I set aside and what should I get to prepare? How much should be cut and what tool is best to cut with? What gauge sheetmetal would be best to patch it?
I have a small MIG and a small arsenal of POR15 products
On a side note- From what I've been reading it seems that the right (US passenger) side is more prone to rotting than the left. Also the case for me. Does anybody have an answer to this assymetrical corrosion? Could it be due to some anodic corrosion from different materials or maybe the car's body ground or perhaps fuel filler? I'm not a chemical or electrical engineer but would love to hear possibilities or answers.
Btw thanks to everybody especially Jim Moncrief for helping me with my AC leak when I broke my hand last month. 1 can of r134a a week was getting quite expensive
cheers
Henry
