Help: What has made my brakes soft?

Here's how my brakes went from firm to soft, any help is appreciated!
My rear pads were getting thin on my '87 9kT so I decided to change them. I followed the Townsend instructions and am aware fo the 4mm allen screw to retract the piston. The drivers side went fine, however there was some minor brake fluid loss when I removed the 14mm cap over the 4mm allen wrench piston screw. I don't know if this is normal or not. The passengers side, however, would not retract more than a couple millimetes. The retractor screw turned freely, but the piston didn't retract. I tried some leverage with a c-clamp but didn't want to risk damaging the caliper so I didn't apply very much force (though I guess I'll need a new calpiper soon). I reinstalled the OLD pads on both sides and set everything up. I adjusted the 4mm screw as specified, though I may not have set it as tightly as I should have as the park brake isn't as effective as it used to be. Upon driving the brakes were not as strong as before. They work okay, but the pedal is softer and I can put it to the floor shortly before wheel lockup, whereas I'd be able to lock up the wheels before. Pumping the pedal makes no difference, and the pedal feel was consistent, just not as good as before. I bled the rear brakes with no difference. The fluid looked fine with no bubbles. The car brakes straight and both calipers heat up evenly/
What can I do to fix my brakes? Does the e-brake adjustment effect pedal firmness?
Thanks!
Craig
