The reluctance of the caliper piston to retract is because it's seized. Not too surprising on a 87 car of any marque.

You'd be best advised to replace both calipers, and their pads, at the same time. Except of course, yours is an 87. So replace the bad'un, and give both sides new pads, and you'll then need to bleed the rear circuits (or at the very least the side whose caliper you replaced). After that, take care to thoroughly bed in the new pads, and you should be golden.

It's worth noting that extremely inexpensive pads often produce spongier brake feel and compromised brake performance. But the rears are not normally much of a factor in overall feel. However, a stuck caliper will most definitely affect feel and effectiveness no matter where in the system it occurs.
