the guy is the original owner. He's a car nut, restores BMWs...
this is his DD.
No rust, interior is cloth but in great shape. Exterior is excellent.
The car is very clean and straight.
87k miles on the clock.
Underhood is clean, clean, clean.
He's done hoses, belts, and h20 pump recently..
Also recently retrofitted to r134a and replaced the compressor with a reman.
turbo appears to be original non-watercooled unit.
5 spd trans, never replaced the clutch but clutch action is great. No trans issues.
since new he has changed the oil every 4000 miles with synthetic.
Has the aluminum 3 spoke 16" wheels which are in great shape and wrapped in new rubber.
The thing is pretty much a very well maintained daily and it's virginal aside from what looked like an aftermarket exhaust (2.5" stainless out the back).
Has the APC (wasn't that an option and not something they all had)
I gather that if he hasn't done it yet, I'm facing a heater core pretty soon here.
Currently I drive an '89 Volvo 745T w/ a MT ... it's got 235k on the clock and is a tank, won't be dying anytime soon. Gas mileage sucks.
so I'm not new to Swede turbos... but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to maintenance issues and costs for these cars.
What are typical parts costs?
What kind of life can I expect to get out of it?
If you had to guess, what would average yearly maintenance/ preventive maintenance costs be?
What kind of gas can I run and what kind of mileage could I expect (50/50 hwy and street driving)?
The Volvo will run on 87 R+M/2 at stock boost with no issues, and 93 when I raise it to 14lbs... so having this same option for economy/fun is sort of important to me too.
Oh, it also comes with all of the factory service lit in their nice dealer binders... a definite plus!
What should I be looking for and asking about, and what do you guys think it's worth?
Are the wheels valuable? ... maybe I could recover some of my costs by selling them and replacing with steel wheels?
thanks all!
