Hello Mark,
When I did the first mount with silicone, it was probably because I had the silicone in my garage refrigerator. One of the advantages of the silicone is that it is very soft. One of the disadvantages is that it tears easily, it's not very 'strong'. I wanted a soft material because I didn't want to make the mounts too hard. The mounts are in compression and tension. They are not in shear (tearing), and the silicone seems to work OK. I actually had a two part polyuethane in my garage when I did the first mount, but I was afraid it would be too stiff. Let me know what brand the urethane is and I'll try it next time I have to do a mount.
If anyone is interested, I also use black silicone to repair rubber door seals. I use a piece of soft tubing to bridge and/or strengthen the torn area. Cover the area with silicone. Smooth the area with a spit moistened finger (water doesn't seem to work well). Now for the good part (as nobody wants to leave his car door opened for a day while the silicone cures), I cover the patch with a piece of plastic wrap. Don't use Saran wrap as the silicone won't cure. Normal plastic wrap is quite porous, and allows moisture to pass, which is how the room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone cures. Close the door, which further forms the material, and use your car normally for about a week. After about a week, just pull the plastic wrap off. The silicone won't stick to the plastic wrap. Your seal is made.
