what i did when i installed my auto was to attach a few nylon cargo straps (non-ratcheting) including one to the farthest outside part and one just to the rear. that way, i could get the angle and rotation just right before sliding it in.
i like Yaofeng's idea with the tire. definately use the hoist for the smaller/lighter part (not much lighter, i know, those autos are massive) and do not use the bolts to draw up the slack. get the splines for the passenger side axle mated, then slide it in. put in one bolt finger tight and rock the trans back and forth (adjusting angle straps as necessary) until it goes in more. keep finger tightening mounting bolts until it's in all the way.
you did grease the nose of the torque converter, right?
it's all about the right angle, and easing it in. it'll go if the angle is right. don't force it or you'll hear expensive noises.
