...and pull it up out of the fuel pump. With the channel locks, you're only using them to get better leverage, so be careful not to crush the elbow.

It's better than trying to pry on one side or the other of the elbow, which risks cracking the plastic. Pulling straight up with the channel locks works well because with the jaws propely spaced on the channel locks, the jaws will be parallel and won't slip off.

You're aiming NOT to have to mess with that fuel line, because it's plastic and very hard to work a new valve into -- unless you use heat, but it's very hard to heat them to the right temperature without destroying the line (not to mention the presence of fuel is a bit scary).
