This gives a good, parallel grip on the elbow when you set the jaws properly. Then pull straight up (after squirting a little WD-40 or the like down the column), maybe with a little gentle twisting. Be firm but gentle, if that makes sense. Be prepared to put the brakes on as soon as it pops free so as to prevent damaging the fuel line when everything flies toward your face!
This may get the elbow out undamaged and you can spare yourself the worries. Use new o-rings (including a new o-ring under the fuel pump assembly retaining ring) on reassembly.
