I wasn't as advanced as the other guys when I did mine several years ago.
I tried the "use the handles from a large pair of channel lock pliers", nope.
So I finally came upon the two pairs of motorcycle tires irons in the back of my tool box. one small, one large. very useful in the correct situation.
If you haven't seen them, the are straight with a tapor to flat on one end, and a curve to a hook on the other. (I will shoot pictures of them and the procedure tonight and put my members area).
Basically I took the larger set for more leverage, put them in an "X", placed the curved end against one of the lips on the locking ring, placed the other tire iron end 180 degrees away, and pushed tire iron end while pulling the other. You need to place the overlap between correctly as they get leverage on each other.
Mental Picture: take a couple of pencils, hold each by the eraser end as though you were going to stab down. with hands in front of you, turn the pencil points past each other to form that "X". Put the points into your pants leg (gently) or some other cloth surface. push away with your right hand as you pull towards you with your left. you will note that if the pencil in your right hand crosses the other closer to you that the pencils will lever off each other to tranmit the force from your hand motion to the points of the pencils. if the pencil crossed on the away side of the X you will note that the pencils don't touch and it fact get further away from each other as you move your hands as above.
If you followed that... put that beverage down and give your self a loud round of applause!
Basically that is the way I got the ring to unscrew on my 9K fuel pump, placed the levers ends against the tab on the ring, did the push away with right hand and pull towards with left hand, and it was done.
Those damn check valves on the top of the pump? Yeah, I broke them right away...
