AC relay Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: AC is intermittent, Abusot, Sun, 8 Oct 2006 13:03:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In addition to the other suggestions, it may be the AC relay, specifically the relay contacts. The contacts carbon up over time, and that increases the resistance. When they get warm (from use), the resistance increases more. Eventually the contacts will close, but no pass enough current to engage the clutch.
If the AC compressor kicks in when the car is cold, but won't kick in after a few minutes of operation, I'd suspect the anti-freeze sensor or the AC relay. Usually it's the relay. I pull the cover off, and clean internal contacts with some fine sandpaper. Don't burnish off the finish, just take off any dark crud. It doesn't hurt to brighten up the relay lugs, and spray some contact cleaner into the socket. I've seen bad contact between the relay lug and socket do the same. The nice thing about this is that it is cheap and easy. If the relay isn't the problem, you haven't wasted any money.
