VW's were the deadhead make of choice when I was on tour ... and so began my love affair...
yeah - I have had a few... tho not for some time... the last bug I had was in like... 95 (I think) ...
so it's safe to say I am out of the loop - and back then I wasn't on line - so I don't know of any forums persay - tho I found this one buy just doing a google search... whcih is what I reccomend... sorry I am not more helpful in where to look .. but I CAN tell you a little bit about what years are/were good for bug/bus engines...(which I think were pretty much interchangeable)...
pretty much anything PRE 75-76 when looking for a bus or a beetle (in my opinion) is what you want - the reason being that in 75 or 76 (sry - not sure which) they started using the pancake engines, which (I think) were mostly fuel injected, and had a lot of electrical problems... also, for a novice, they were harder to work on (don't know if this is a concern of yours) ... the old upright engines were VERY straight forward carburator engines that were super easy to learn and fix...
Thats the best i can do without mispeaking (I am NOT an expert at all)
I know a little more about busses than bugs... and with busses the year reflected hugely on the body style and the window configs... (late 50's were the COOLEST -with 15 and 21 window bodies... nice!)- but the body style changed very little with the bugs ... so i think it's more about the engines.
I definitely think you should find a VW forum tho and talk to some folks who know what they're talking about more than me...
Good luck - Volkswagons were my first love... >sigh< I am sure she'll love the one she gets.
