Two comments:
1) you haven't considered other possibilities, like poor fuel with low vapor pressure or low fuel rail pressure from bad fuel pressure regulator. Both of these are plausible if you started the motor with starting fluid.
2) you are right that jumpering wires would not stimulate a dying fuel pump (the banging trick works by causing minute rotation of the FP motor, which is just enough to allow it to move past dead motor poles to good ones). With a car of your age and with the events you reported, it doesn't pay to do diagnostic work ad infinitum. I would replace the FP relay and main relay if I were you. Not to say there could be other issues, just that $25 in new relays seems like a good investment here.
