Thanks, Ken. My steering column is very loose in it's round fitting at the top and there is a lot of play there. Is this what you did (from Alldata):
Action:
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Remove the steering wheel and coil spring. Be sure to point the wheels in the straight ahead position before removing the coil spring, taking care not to damage it.
3. Remove the steering column cover pieces.
4. Remove the 3 screws from the combination switch bracket. Pull the bracket and switches back to allow access to the electrical connectors.
5. Unplug the direction indicator control's connectors, one yellow, one green and one black.
6. Unplug the windshield wiper control's connectors.
7. Remove the through bolt which locates the steering column shaft. Use a 16 mm socket on the bolt and a 17 mm wrench on the nut side. See Figure 2-A.
8. Remove the spacer. See Figure 2-B. The spacer should be replaced by three (3) washers, P/N 80 73 108. See Figure 2.
9. Fit the through bolt in place again and screw the nut on finger tight.
10. Adjust the position of the steering wheel to suit the customer and then tighten the bolt again.
Tightening torque: 10 N-m
WARNING The bolt must not be tightened harder. It should be possible for the steering wheel to move down against the dashboard when subjected to a force of 500-1,000 N.
