A few weeks ago, I posted about the top radiator hose popping off while driving. The local indy suggested replacing the radiator as the plastic connection was starting to get brittle. The only other thought from the BB was head gasket, which I didn't think was a likely culprit due to the lack of other symptoms.
So, I had the indy replace the radiator. It's been 3 weeks and everything seems good. The temp gauge seems to read a little cooler, and it doesn't spike up as high when sitting after highway driving. I've been watching the hose periodically, and it hasn't slipped at all.
My best guess is that the old radiator was not flowing coolant well and causing backpressure in the coolant system (i.e. the water pump pushing coolant with nowhere to go). I noticed that both times the hose popped off, the engine was hot, as was the coolant. Both times, I had made a number of short trips after a 20-minute run on the highway. This seemed to be the worst for heat buildup, since the car never got any real airflow to cool down. Perhaps the heat caused everything to be a little more flexible as well.
Anyhow, all seems well now. The only issue is that the outside temp reading seems to be a bit high, and doesn't come back down to ambient as readily. It probably got tucked up somewhere not in the airflow. Well, the other problem is that the plastic panels under the radiator decided to detach while on the highway the other day. Did a nice job grinding down the heads on a couple of the screws that hold (held) the panel up. That was fun...
Thanks again for the help.
