The Car:
'97 9000 CSE 2.3 Auto
Short history:
Shift points had been getting later and later (not shifting into 4th until 55/60 mph). Then suddenly no reverse, up-shifts to 4th by ~25 mph!
Diagnoses:
With the help of this board (CMyles, BobS, Kappy and lots of others, thank you all) concluded governor seals were likely culprit and relatively cheap to do. So I persuaded my Indie to do the job - first time he has ever opened an auto, he has only ever taken them out, sent them away and then put them back in.
The Horror Within:
Someone had already been in there before - this part of the car's history had been deleted from the records. Governor seals had been replaced with 3 steel rings and no o-rings! one of the rings was badly worn and had snapped. The 'cylinder' which the governor goes in is badly 'worn'. My Indie has re-assembled governor with a new steel ring and two of the old ones - still no o-rings. This of course can only ever be a stop-gap.
Previous owner had no reason to hide this - he 'ditched' the car because of engine problems - now has another lump in it. Previous workshop hasn't 'fessed up to this atrocity either, and were very open about work they had done and I did ask them about any auto problems/work done.
The Result:
I now have Reverse, 1st, 2nd and very occasionally 3rd (and only when hot). After sitting in traffic 1st to 2nd is delayed until 25+mph. Any ideas what causes this? I understood that the valve body was responsible for changing gear (as far as shift points go). Kickdown cable adjustment hasn't been touched, so seems unlikely.
OK, now the 'how long is a piece of string?' type question:
What should I do now?
Fix the gearbox I've got - bore out and sleeve governor housing
Fix up another 'box I can 'have' - this one only has reverse though
Try to make one good box out of these two
Get a re-con or scrap-yard salvage unit
(I've spent around £2k on this car this year, don't want to throw good money after bad, but then again it's probably 'sorted' if I get the gearbox fixed)
TIA
