if you car was filled and sealed at the factory it most likely can go longer then what saab recommends. but if over the years it has had different brands of coolant, tap water and such added over the years it does take its toll. especially the non-distilled water causing contaminates that will prematurely corrode a radiator.

i've gota few hoses on my V6 (70K) miles that even had a sludge that appears to be from a hose that dissolved internally from poor quality. lastly just do a google on the crap coolant GM is putting in their cars now too! coolants over the years have caused serious issues in some vehicles (like vw vanagons) due to high mineral content, galvanization on vehicles with dissimilar head to block materials. my guess he has seen very little contaminated (looking) coolant or few radiator failures to support his oppinion

so there are many opinions. spending $70 every couple years to purge your coolant will most likely do more good and not be a waste of money.

FYI my Porsche has lifetime coolant (so they say) and i'm guessing it has to do with aluminum heads AND blocks...that car I really don't mess with and will look at it around the 90K service but all my Saabs get it every to years...the one I neglected the most (88 9000T) had both the transmission cooler and radiator eventually go due to internal corrosion. I can tell those are the car i just added "tap water" to all the time.
