I believe that my head gasket failure (shortly after I bought a 10-yr-old car w/ 44K) is a direct result of old coolant. I purchased my '93 Aero in 2003, with 44K miles. The car was nearly perfect, and it came with all records. There were no records indicating a coolant flush (with 44K, there weren't too many records beyond a 30K mile service, and some tires.) I believe that the coolant was original, but had probably been "topped-up" periodically (Most likely w/ tap water). My head gasket failed after I had had the car about 3 months (I had actually driven it on a regular basis, not this 4000 mi/yr rate). I think the coolant had degraded to the point of being harmful to the gasket. (I certainly could be wrong, but how many HGs go at 44K on an otherwise perfectly maintained car?)
So, there's my story. I need to flush my coolant once again. I think every two years would be sufficient, but not a waste of money.
