Would like some technical advice on installing the timing belt in my 1995 Saab 9000 CSE with 3.0L V6 engine. Car runs well, has 200K + miles, and due for timing belt change. I've had the car since new, but this is the first time i'm doing it myself. I have all the necessary tech data (Saab 2:1 Basic Engine B308 Manual, etc) and tools (Baum AS4145 Timing Kit, etc.). I have the timing cover off and ready install the Baum Kit and am having a problem using the Baum kit per the instructions. I have all cam sprocket/timing cover marks and crankshaft mark aligned. When i install the crankshaft locking tool and rotate crank until locking tool stops against the water pump, the cam sprockets do not allow insertion of the cam locking tools. (I have the cam locking tools properly oriented - red on left, green on right, and end marked "top" is up). If I rotate the crank slightly, i can get one cam locking tool or the other to slide between the cam sprocket teeth, but not both. With no experience with this job, i'm not sure if this is a common problem or not, what the actual problem is, and how to proceed. I have several theories on what is causing the problem but not really sure. I have not yet released the tension on the belt which according to the instructions, you don't do until you have all three locking tools installed. My thought is to install the crankshaft locking tool and one of the camshaft locking tools, release the tension on the belt, and then use a tool to rotate the other camshaft spockets (the remaining two without the locking tool installed) just enough to allow the locking tool to be inserted. I noticed that on each camshaft sprocket, one of the six circular holes is cut out with a special shape that would allow insertion of a tool that i could fabricate to rotate the sprocket just the little amount necessary to allow insertion of the locking tool. Is this the correct approach? Any experts out there who can tell me what to do? Thanks,

Barry Hoberman
